Livestock Industry

Major Concepts:
This course includes
principles of evaluation and selection of beef, swine, horses, sheep, and dairy
cattle. Students will be exposed to
livestock management and animal health.
Content:
The content shall include but not be limited to the following:
· Beef Evaluation and Selection
· Dairy Cattle Selection and Evaluation
· Horses and Horsemanship
· SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience Program) Record Keeping
· Swine Evaluation and Selection
· Sheep Evaluation and Selection
Special Note:
FFA membership is
suggested and is available to all students taking 1 semester of agriculture per
school year.
Intended Outcomes:
After successfully
completing this course, the student will be able to:

Describe
the major breeds of beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, swine, and horses
·
Evaluate
and select livestock, dairy, and horses
·
Distinguish
between desirable and undesirable appearance of animals
·
Give a
quality set of oral reasons for dairy cattle and horses
·
Understand
important livestock management techniques
Grading:
Students will be graded on the following criteria:
· Attendance - 90% attendance required
· Homework assignments - approximately 50% of grade will be based on quality of homework
· Tests will be both objective in nature – approximately 50% of grade will be based on tests
· Grading Scale
A – 90% or above
B – 80-89.9%
C – 70-79.9%
D – 60-69.9%
F – Less than 60%
