Major Concepts:

The student will be able to write a purpose-driven five paragraph essay in all of the modes of writing.  The student will be able to read, understand, and discuss (orally and written) selected pieces of literature

  • Usage especially through sentence combining
  • The Red Pony
  • The Call of the Wild
  • Field of Dreams as myth
  • Short stories
  • Creative Nonfiction
  • Our Town
  • Self-chosen novels
  • Technical communication

 

Special Note:

This class is designed for students who are having difficulty in English or who are undecided about going on to college.  The content is geared to communicating in the world of work.

 

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

  • Write a grammatically correct essay with a thesis, development and unity showing understanding of descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and expository writing.
  • Compare/contrast and synthesize ideas from a variety of literature selections
  • Analyze character, point of view, organization and form

 

Grading:

Students will be graded on the following criteria:

  • Basic proficiency at writing various types of essays
  • Quizzes and tests measuring knowledge of a skill, concept, or plot
  • Daily journal as a means of developing writing fluency
