The purpose of this course is to contextualize reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills within students’ career or college paths.

 

Content:  The content shall include but is not limited to the following:

 

Special Note:  Students need a three-ring binder and a single-subject notebook.

 

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate each step of the writing process: brainstorm, draft, write, revise, and edit.
  2. Use a variety of memorization and contextual skills to enhance vocabulary.
  3. Conduct Internet research to find factual information on multiple jobs.
  4. Write a comparative essay, literary analysis, letter to the editor, cover letter, résumé, letter of application, letter of complaint, and interview transcript.
  5. Deliver a variety of oral presentations to demonstrate knowledge of content, including mock interview, group discussion leading, and individual presentation with good use of multimedia and class participation.
  6. Discuss literary themes present in class novels, analyze texts for an author’s purpose, and cite examples of various literary devices and use of figurative language.
  7. Use correct Modern Language Association format.
  8. Avoid plagiarism.

 

Grading: Students will be graded on the following criteria:

5.      Semester Exam                         10%

6.      Final Exam                                           15%
