Course Title: Clothing
Course Length: Semester
Grade Level: 9-12
Major
Concepts: Apparel Design and
Merchandising is designed to expose students to career opportunities and skills
within the apparel design/merchandising industry. Emphasis is on skill
development in design, merchandising, production, and acquisition and care of
textiles and apparel products and services.
Instruction includes art and design principles, construction techniques,
entrepreneurship, and merchandising opportunities. FCCLA (Family, Career, and
Community Leaders of America) leadership activities are an integral part of
this course.
Content:
The content shall include but not limited to the following:
- Analyze
apparel and fashion
- Analyze
the textiles and apparel industries
- Examine
fiber and textile product materials
- Illustrate
apparel Design skills
- Demonstrate
techniques to produce, alter, and repair textile products
- Analyze
personal and industry apparel consumer strategies
- Analyze
career options within the textile and apparel industries
Intended Outcomes:
After successfully
completing this course, the student will be able to:
- Choose appropriate fiber content for
desired outcome of a garment
- Choose appropriate fabric construction
for desired garment
- Distinguish the difference between fad,
fashion and classic
- Construct a project using a pattern
- Examine apparel for infants, children,
and individuals with special needs
- Practice wardrobe planning skills
- Change a garment fad, keeping the
silhouette into a classic
Grading:
Students will be grade on the following criteria:
- Paperwork
about the fashion industry and its history
- Labs
relating to fabric construction, fabric coloring, and fiber identification
- Construction
of 2 articles of clothing
- Identifying
and presenting the colors and clothing styles that enhance their best
features.
