Subject Area:   Family & Consumer Economics

Course Title:     Consumer Economics

Course Length: Semester

Grade Level:     12

 

Major Concepts:

Personal and Family Finance/Consumer Economics emphasizes basic economic concepts related to the students’ roles as consumers, producers and citizens.  Content includes information which will develop students to become rational, competent decision makers, productive members of the workforce, informed and effective consumers, prudent savers and investors, responsible participating citizens and effective participants in the global economy.  Students will develop financial skills for personal and family well-being; balancing work and family; decision and consumer rights and responsibilities. 

 

Special Note:

This course is designed to be offered as an alternative to earn consumer Economics credit when taught by a certified Family and consumer Sciences teacher with a Consumer Economics endorsement.  This course will also meet the Idaho Achievement Standards for Economics.   FCCLA leadership activities should be an integral part of the course.

The content shall include but not limited to the following:

  • Economic Institutions
  • Personal and Family Decisions
  • Major purchase decisions
  • Planning for financial security
  • Credit
  • Citizenship
  • Careers in Consumer services

           

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the role of government in the United States Economy
  • Distinguish the difference between opportunity cost, tradeoff, supply and demand
  • Identify three different types of economic systems
  • Understand the differences between proprietorship, partnership, corporation and Entrepreneurship
  • Evaluate needs and wants
  • Identify types of investments and the advantages and disadvantages of each
  • Identify the cost of using credit and successful management of credit
  • Successfully fill out simple income tax forms (1040EZ and 1040A)

           

Grading:

Students will be grade on the following criteria:

  • Written work from each chapter
  • Chapter tests
  • Entrepreneurship project
  • Class Activities
