Major Concepts:

This course is designed to expose students to knowledge and skills common to nutrition and food related occupations.

 

Content:

The content shall include but not limited to the following:

 

  • Evaluate factors affecting individual and family food choices
  • Analyze nutrition, health and wellness practices across the life span
  • Employ food laboratory management techniques
  • Demonstrate the management of food and resources for individuals and families
  • Demonstrate the preparation of nutritious foods for individuals and families
  • Analyze career options within nutrition, foods and related fields

 

 

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

 

  • Assemble a grocery list from a planned menu
  • Shop for food avoiding traps at the grocery store
  • Choose nutritious food from selected items
  • Plan both a nutritious and aesthetically pleasing meal
  • Prepare a wide variety of foods
  • Follow appropriate safety and sanitation guidelines
  • Given a budget, shop, prepare, and clean up a nutritious meal

 

 

Grading: Students will be grade on the following criteria:

 

  • A safety, sanitation and nutrition test before participating in labs
  • Written work will be given on each chapter
  • Lab work, including finished product and clean up
