Course Title:              Parenting

Course Length:          Semester       

Grade Level:              10-12  

 

Major Concepts:

This is a one semester course that emphasizes parenting choices and parenting decisions. Content includes pregnancy stages of prenatal development and the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of the infant and young child. This course is designed to strengthen parenting and guidance skills, positive family relationships, safety, and health practices. Students will learn to evaluate child care services and to explore careers related to young children. FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) leadership activities are an integral part of this course.

 

Content:

The content shall include but not limited to the following:

  • Parenting roles and responsibilities
  • Beginning the parenting process
  • Developing states: Physical, emotional, social and intellectual
  • Positive parenting practices
  • Family stability and challenges
  • Careers in Early childhood professions

 

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify their readiness for parenthood
  • Become familiar with the prenatal care, both physical and emotional
  • Identify the different stages-newborn, infant, toddler and preschool in children
  • Successfully plan, prepare and carryout a lesson with preschoolers
  • Identify careers that deal with children
  • Understand the work involved in balancing work and family
  • Identify factors that lead to child abuse and neglect

           

Grading: Students will be grade on the following criteria:

  • Homework
  • Tests
  • Projects
  • Planning and participation in Preschool
