Major Concepts:

The major purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge of music theory and appreciation, the ability to play a musical instrument at an advanced level, and the opportunity to participate in various groups with multiple performance opportunities.

 

Content:

The content shall include the following:

·        knowledge of musical notation such as notes, rests, advanced timing, theory, and harmony

·        opportunity to play music from various genres and styles

·        ability to correctly play and take care of their chosen instrument

·        ability to understand intonation, articulation, and dynamics

·        opportunity to perform with a group

·        opportunity to compete with other groups and be adjudicated

·        opportunity to participate in extra-curricular groups

·        opportunity to pursue excellence through playing and/or watching others

·        opportunity to create music and perform advanced rhythms through the “Stampede” group

 

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

·        play their instrument at an advanced level alone or in a group

·        understand and use the major elements of music, including theory and harmony

·        be able to tutor less skilled musicians

·        be able to participate in extra-curricular musical activities

·        be able to audition for honor groups and/or scholarships

·        be given the opportunity to earn a letter, and other awards of achievement

·        be able to write and perform musical compositions

 

Grading:

Students will be graded on the following:

·        Honest attempt, positive attitude, work ethic                  50%

·        Consistent practice, participation, concert attendance, assignments - 50%
