Major Concepts:

The purpose of this course is to equip students with the reading strategies necessary to become successful readers engaged in lifelong learning; these include comprehension and decoding skills.

 

Content:

The content is based on the Corrective Reading curriculum, which includes—but is not limited to—the following:


  • Vocabulary study.
  • Affixes.
  • Parts of speech.
  • Subject/predicate of a sentence.
  • Oral reading fluency.
  • Comprehension questions.
  • Following instructions.
  • Sequence of events.

                      

Special Note:  Students are placed in Reading based on ISAT scores.

 

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

1.      Tell the definition and part of speech for a given set of words.

2.      Combine sentences with appropriate conjunctions.

3.      Write step-by-step directions for completing a task. 

4.      Answer multiple part comprehension questions.

5.      Identify contradictory information. 

6.      Identify the subject and predicate of a sentence. 

  1. Place events in order of sequence.
  2. Improve oral reading fluency.
  3. Improve sight word recognition.
  4. Write two 2-page Book Critiques after completing two outside novels.

 

Grading: Students will be grade on the following criteria:

1.      Comprehension                                    45%

2.      Decoding                                              45%

3.      2 Book Critiques                                  10%
