Major Concepts: The major purpose of this course is to provide students a firm understanding of the fundamental concepts found within the field of chemistry. This class aims to provide comprehensive coverage of the major fields and concepts within chemistry.

 

Content:

The content includes but is not limited to the following:

·        Students will be able to critically analyze and design scientific experiments.

·        Students will be able to define matter in its various phases at a fundamental, atomic level.

·        Students will describe in words and numbers the various ways energy and matter interact at the atomic level.

·        Students will be able to write equations for and analyze multiple types of chemical reactions.

·        Students will be able to use mathematics to solve various types of equations and problems.

·        Students will be introduced to the basic principles and vocabulary found within the fields of organic and nuclear chemistry.

·        Students will demonstrate safe laboratory procedures for handling potentially hazardous materials.

 

Special Note: Safety is a key concern when dealing with laboratory experiences within a classroom. Students are expected to learn how to use equipment safely and effectively.

 

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

·        Complete and do well in a university, 100 level chemistry course.

·        Identify and use various pieces of laboratory equipment.

·        Know how to learn independently through the use of a textbook and other resources.

 

Grading: Students will be graded on the following criteria:

 

Problems of the Day............................   5%

Homework and classwork................... 30%

Exams and quizzes............................... 50%

Semester Final..................................... 15%
