Major Concepts: 

The major purpose of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding in the fields of physics and chemistry.  This will be an introductory course that will help them with several science classes in the future.

 

Content:

The content shall include but not limited to the following:

  • Students will use science skills to understand the steps of the scientific method.
  • Students will learn that all things in the universe are either energy or matter.
  • Students will identify different energy transformations.
  • The learner will recognize physical properties based on information on the periodic table.
  • The learner will understand that gravity and magnetism are universal forces.
  • Students will be able to do unit conversions in the metric system.
  • Students will understand and recognize the different phases of matter.

 

Special Note:

Safety is a key concern in this class and all students will be expected to follow the safety guidelines that are posted in class.

 

Intended Outcomes:

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

·        Take higher level classes such as physics and chemistry.

·        Recognize more about the physical world around them by observing things.

·        Feel more confident when asked to deal with numbers in the metric system.

 

Grading:

Students will be grade on the following criteria:

·        Attendance and participation ----    10% of the grade.

·        Homework and assignments ----  20% of the grade.

·        Lab activities ----------------------            20% of the grade.

·        Projects -----------------------------         20% of the grade.

·        Tests and quizzes ----------------- 30% of the grade
